Chemistry Newsletter April

This month students will learn about Metals reactivity series and metals extraction
This unit begins by looking at the general properties of metals and the benefits of forming alloys. The reactivity series is introduced and there is a considerable range of practical work that can be used to illustrate the reactivity of different elements. This is related to the method of extraction of different metals. This unit is cross-referenced to assessment objectives A1–5, B1–6, C1–4 and Units 2, 3 and 4.

These are the main topics we will cover for IGCSE combined science

  •          Properties of metals
  •          the structure of an alloy
  •          Reactivity series of metals
  •          Deduce an order of reactivity from a given set of experimental results
  •          Extraction of metals
  •          Describe the essential reactions in the extraction of iron in the blast furnace
  •          Relate the method of extraction of a metal from its ore to its position in the reactivity series limited to group I and II metals, aluminum, iron and copper
